Meet the Editor: Brianne Kane, Associate Books Editor | | "When I was ten, I learned you could have a job where you read books and tell people about them. I was shocked! I thought it was too good to be true." That's how Brianne Kane—who is SciAm's new Associate Books Editor and goes by Bri—describes the moment she discovered her dream job. After honing her reviewing skills at Electric Literature and BUST Magazine, Bri quickly made her mark at Scientific American by launching its first-ever end-of-year compilation of staff favorites. She is now spearheading upcoming lists of Best Fiction and Nonfiction of 2025. Bri's deep passion for books and science journalism is rooted in her belief that "everyone deserves to know the latest discoveries and developments in science." She's especially drawn to books that challenge perspectives and spark curiosity—whether it's nonfiction that satisfies her "need to know everything" or science fiction with "weird but believable aliens." "I hope readers come to think of us as a trusted source for book recommendations," she says, "because we can separate the fakers from the real researchers and can always sniff out a cyborg." | | | | |
