How to Transfer a Cue

Cues should always be clear and consistent. However, cues do allow for some flexibility and can be transferred. Are two cues too similar, so similar that your dog confuses them (for example, "stretch" and "fetch")? Do you need to deliver a cue from a distance? Do you want the versatility that is possible when your dog knows a variety of cues? In all of these instances, knowing how to transfer a cue accurately is important.

Watch as Laura Monaco Torelli, KPA faculty member who will be leading our upcoming Dog Trainer Professional program in Phoenix, AZ, demonstrates.

Teaching Name Targets
There are so many benefits to teaching an animal a name target. It helps an animal know where to go at the start of a session with multiple animals, it can help guide an animal to a specific location with no specific previous training, and it can be the starting point for various cognitive projects.
During a Live from The Ranch broadcast, Ken Ramirez demonstrated an initial step of teaching this behavior by working on target (shape) discrimination with 3-year-old mini-donkey Sparkle.
