Can Cats and Dogs Be Friends?

Can Cats and Dogs Be Friends?
By Joan Orr
What is the natural relationship?
"They fight like cats and dogs."

This saying reflects the commonly held belief that dogs and cats just can't get along because they are natural enemies. People who share their homes with both species, or who have read The Incredible Journey, know that this is not true. Dogs and cats can form fast friendships. It is life experiences with members of the other species, and not an inborn animosity, that determines how cats and dogs feel about each other.

The initial meeting sets the stage for future considerations in the dog/cat relationship. Both species communicate with body language and, because they "speak" differently, misinterpretations may start the relationship on the right or wrong paw, depending on who says what to whom!

Q: Tell us about the first animal you trained.
AI trained an Old English sheepdog in the 1970s; she was my first purebred dog. I took her to an obedience class because I knew she would be a large dog—and that could be trouble. My sheepdog excelled in her class; the instructors even suggested we enter obedience competitions. This dog earned her CD before she was a year old and earned her CDX (trained by me, at home, out of a book) before she was two years old. She was invited to the first-ever Gaines National competition. This dog was one of those dogs about which you say, "Boy! When I think of the things *that* dog could have done if she had been clicker trained…"

Meet August Certified Training Partner (CTP) of the Month Stephanie Peters!

Stephanie Peters, KPA CTP and CPDT-KA, owner of Plucky Paws, adopted her "sweet little dog Marmalade" from Second Chance Animal Rescue Puerto Rico in 2013, spurring her interest in animal training. She had heard of using a clicker for training, but "stuck to lure-reward training, using a verbal marker informally" with Marmalade—until she attended A Weekend with Ken Ramirez in Des Moines, Iowa, in 2016, after a recent move to Iowa from Boston. Ken spoke about reinforcement, the pitfalls of coercion, elements of behavior science, and more. Stephanie says, "I was incredibly inspired and enlightened, and eagerly attended ClickerExpo in Cincinnati a month later."
