The Art and Joy of Shaping |
Shaping is a method of gradually teaching dogs a new behavior by rewarding them for each small step in the right direction. Essentially, shaping breaks down a complex behavior into more manageable parts. This approach not only helps build the animal's confidence but is also an effective means of communication. Plus, it's an enjoyable process! |

CTP of the Month: Sarah Rodriguez |
| Sarah Rodriguez, KPA CTP (distinct from the instructor of KPA's course In Training Outside the Box: Teaching Training Creatively and Adaptively LIVE sharing the same name), was working in the dog-care industry while she completed a master’s degree in visual art at UCLA. Her goal at that time was to pursue interspecies communication, but she was discovering that it would be difficult to have the animal interactions she prioritized. As a dog walker and then a trainer, Sarah had used aversives before learning about stress signals in dogs. Observing those signals in her own dog, she began to rely more on enrichment and positive reinforcement. |
