The first episode of Lost Women of Science Season 2: A Grasshopper in Very Tall Grass, is now available wherever you get your podcasts. This season, Lost Women of Science is talking about someone named Klára Dán von Neumann–or Klári to her family and friends. Klári wrote the first lines of modern-style computer code ever to be executed on a computer. And not just that – those lines of code were used to optimize a design for the hydrogen bomb. Klári takes us into a fascinating moment in American history that is widely misunderstood: Early computers were developed in tandem with nuclear weapons, as a means to make even deadlier designs possible. The phones in our pockets are a result of this complicated history. And Klári was far from the only woman involved in this work; the field of early programming was mostly women. That’s something that even many industry veterans are surprised to learn. Join us for a lesson in computer science, a correction to the history books, and a very human story.
