Next Steps in Safe Place Training: Sound Desensitization

In Part 1 of How to Create a Safe Place for Your Dog, KPA faculty member Debbie Martin demonstrated how to establish a safe station for your dog when she is feeling anxious or fearful. Now, in Part 2, Debbie demonstrates how to desensitize a dog to sounds that cause anxiety and fear, and how to teach the dog to go to the safe place when she hears those sounds.

AVSAB Advocates for Humane, Reward-Based Training—and for KPA!

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) position statement on humane dog training emphasizes the belief that Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) and Karen Pryor Clicker Training (KPCT) devote 100% of the organizations' energy toward sharing: "Current literature on dog training methods shows a clear advantage of reward-based methods over aversive-based methods with respect to immediate and long-term welfare, training effectiveness, and the dog-human relationship."

Concept Training in Action: Take a Hike

Teaching your dog to tell the difference between left and right on cue is not only fun, but the skill can be handy when you are walking on hiking trails. To begin teaching this behavior, you will need to set up two cones and teach your dog to touch a specific cone.

CTP of the Month: Jennifer Long

Jennifer Long, KPA CTP, was working at a local animal shelter and contemplating a certification program to further her interest in animal training and behavior. A veterinary behaviorist who was advising Jen and the shelter suggested the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Dog Trainer Professional (DTP) program. Jen says, "I'm forever grateful. That was the best advice, as it reshaped my entire career direction."
