Climate Change is Making Severe Weather Worse

Ten years ago, scientists struggled to connect individual storms to climate change, but advances in what’s known as attribution science have overcome that challenge. In Rough Weather Ahead, from our June issue, climatologist Jennifer Francis, explains how she and her colleagues can now measure the extent to which climate change amplifies extreme weather, including winter storms, flooding rains and summer heat waves. Understanding this link will help us to prepare for the impacts on agriculture, security, human health and more. On the bright side, the rash of bad weather has created greater public awareness of the problem. Perhaps we are finally ready to confront the gathering storm.
