THE SHAPING GAME
Shaping is the process by which you gradually teach a dog a new action or behavior by rewarding him during each step of the process. It is a great way to teach some difficult behaviors, expand a dog's capabilities, exercise a dog's brain, and build your chops as a trainer. An excellent way to get started with shaping—and a fun enrichment game—is to do something with an object. Once you get started, you'll see that the possibilities are endless! January 2019 KPA CTP OF THE MONTH
Sherry Nativo, KPA CTP, assists pet parents with the everyday, and the unexpected, issues that arise with animals. Private lessons, online coaching, and educational offerings via social media are all means that Sherry employs to help overwhelmed pet owners learn simple and effective training strategies

It was Sadie, Sherry's reactive dog, that led to her discovery of clicker training and the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Dog Trainer Professional (DTP) course. Sadie was "out of control, barking, lunging, and redirecting (biting) my other dog on our walks," Sherry remembers. "It was a nightmare." Sherry searched for a dog trainer who did not use a shock or prong collar. "I didn't know how damaging those collars were at the time, but I knew I wanted to prevent behavior, not correct it." An inexperienced, but helpful, trainer pointed Sherry in the direction of the ClickerExpo conference. The rest is history. "I attended ClickerExpo, heard Emma Parsons, and, after reading her books and some books by Karen Pryor and others, BAM, my problem was solved," reports Sherry.
