| | Dear Friends of Scientific American, For just the second time in our 179-year history, Scientific American is endorsing a candidate for president of the United States: Kamala Harris. We don't make endorsements lightly. We feel a responsibility to share what we know about how this election could shape the future of U.S. science, health, technology, education and the environment. Our editors evaluated Vice President Harris's record and policy positions and compared them with former President Donald Trump's, and the contrast is clear. Harris consistently supports science, evidence, and efforts to improve health and the environment. Trump spreads misinformation, disdains expertise, and appoints ideologues who undermine evidence-based policies. There are many reasons to choose one candidate over the other, but for this endorsement we focused on our core mission to advance our understanding of science and the world. We respectfully encourage you to vote for Harris and join us in standing up for education, comprehensive health care, climate change action, technological advances, and support for reality-based governance. We'll be covering this election closely over the next few months, with news, graphics, podcasts and expert commentary. If you'd like to share or support our work, consider becoming a subscriber. Sincerely, Laura Helmuth Editor in Chief Scientific American
