Improving the Lives of Shelter Dogs: A Conversation with Karen Pryor
By KPCT
We've always wanted to help dogs in shelters. Anybody trainer, really any person, who enters a shelter wants to help. Dogs don't always arrive at a shelter in the best shape behaviorally, and they need all the help that they can get. It is easy to see that there's so much that could be done—without even taking the animals out of the kennels. Often there is no place for shelter managers and staff to learn techniques that could help. Shelters can rarely afford to hire expensive behaviorists and trainers.
Certification That's Meaningful

Our Dog Trainer Professional program focuses on the science behind behavior and gives participants all of the skills needed to succeed as professional trainers!

Carolyn Clark to lead DTP Program in Toronto

Q: Tell us about the first animal you trained.
A: The first animal that I trained was a Siamese beta fish. It was a beautiful blue and I was twelve. He learned to swim through the loop of my thumb and index finger wherever and whenever this "loop" appeared in the aquarium.
Q: Was there a particular dog/animal in your life that was your most important teacher?
The first dog that was 100% trained with a marker and reinforcement was an English cocker spaniel, Penny. She learned new things so quickly and easily, and she understood concepts. I remember telling Penny when she was about six or eight months old how impressed I was that she was so smart, "even smarter than Kate."
